The Maine Coast Painting

$450.00
sold out

Keeping summer within sight.

An original 1941 oil on canvas by New England artist Stephen Searles captures the Maine coast in all its rocky, slightly unruly glory.

Searles studied at the Art Students League and the École des Beaux-Arts at Fontainebleau and was closely tied to the New England art world through the Copley Society of Boston and Rockport Art Association. His work also appears in institutional collections, including the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and the Smithsonian American Art archives. Maine Coast measures 23.5" × 20" and has exactly the sort of moody water, rocky shoreline, and old-New-England palette that makes it feel as right over a mantel in November as it does in July.

I’ve kept this piece in the original frame to keep its history intact. It has a few small nicks consistent with its age, and can be reconditioned or replaced if you see fit.
